Give yourself a superiority complex Yamaha has created the most advanced evolution of the litre-sports touring genre ever with the FZ1. A great motorcycle starts with a great engine, and they don’t come any greater than 998cc of legendary R1 power, tuned specifically for optimal street and highway performance. With crisp-running fuel injection it will pull cleanly from just about anywhere on the tacho dial, but with a flick of the wrist, you can have that tremendous mid-range punch and massive top-end power. And of course, the advanced FZ1 rolling chassis is built to utilise every morsel of it. Using the engine as a stressed member in six places, the light and rigid aluminium frame has been specially mould cast, allowing engineers to vary metal thicknesses and fine tune the desired quotients of torsional, lateral and vertical stiffness and flex. Similarly, the rigid, Controlled Fill aluminium swingarm contributes to sublime handling while reducing drive chain reaction. Adjustable suspension at both ends provides the final touch in keeping tyres and tarmac perfectly interfaced, the rigid, 43mm fork boasting twin 320mm front disc brakes and monobloc four-piston calipers. Fuel injected powerhouse: R1-style fuel injection with computer-controlled sub-throttle valves provides precise fuel/air mixture for superb power delivery across the entire rev range. Closed-deck cylinder block provides great strength while allowing a narrow engine in spite of big, 77mm bores. Five-valve efficiency: Narrow-angle five-valve combustion chambers produce a highly efficient 11.5:1 compression ratio, while big valves and high-lift cams flow plenty of air. Mean and green: Four-into-one chamberless shortstyle exhaust contains stainless steel EXUP and threeway catalyst with O2 sensor for outstanding power delivery throughout the rev range and low emissions. Adjustable suspension: Adjustable suspension at both ends lets the FZ1 be dialled in for a wide range of uses - everything from track days to urban assault to sport touring. High-capacity cooling: Curved high-capacity radiator with twin ring-style fans keeps everything cool under all conditions.
